The Death of a Good Friend
On February 14, 2009 our 5′ Ball Python “Frederick” passed on. He was 15 years old and will be missed greatly. Frederick was what got all this, my love of snakes and this website started. Believe it or not I bought him in Myrtle Beach SC while I was down there for Senior week of all things. Most Seniors come back with tattoos, stories of jail time and a whole gammet of other things. I come back with a baby ball python no bigger around than my thumb and only 12″ long.
Frederick spent many a day wrapped around my neck or the neck of any on of my kids. He became a staple in the neighborhood and there was not one of them that had not had a picture of it around their neck. If I didn’t know better I would say that he actually had emotions and was attached to us. But snakes do not have emotions…do they?
I am going to believe that he did.
In the 15 years I had Frederick he only bit me once, and yes it was my fault..SFE!! Stupid Feeding Error. Since that day we never had a problem again. Not only were there no more problems, Frederick single handedly (or whatever you want to call it for a snake) got numerous people over their phobia of snakes. This includes my entire family who now live among 6 snakes, two bearded dragons and whatever I come home with on any particular day or whatever may show up at the door in boxes marked “live animals”.
Thanks Frederick for my/our love of snakes…we owe it all to you an you will be missed!!!
But like they say “Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end”, to honor Fredericks life we just brought home two baby ball pythons. One male and one female so “the Frederick legacy” will be carried on for many years to come.

I am sorry to hear about Frederick passing away. I was very touched reading about him. I know he was a special pet.
I just bought “Phoenix” yesterday, also a baby ball python. He is approx. 14″ long but fairly thick. I have only had him about 24 hours now. I am not concerned yet that he has not eaten the thawed pinky mouse my kids and I put in there for him. Phoenix is our second reptile, we have a Northern garter snake named Jupiter. He is about 2 and a half feet long but very skinny. He also has beautiful markings, a checkerboard pattern and three flourscent yellow stripes. He eats only live fish.
I am the epitome of a girly girl but I love reptiles, especially snakes. The are sleek and beautiful and sadly so misunderstood and feared unnecessarily.
Congratulations on the new babies! LOL.
Matt, I am so sorry to hear about Frederick. I remember the day you brought him home from the beach. I know you will miss him.
